Universitario are Peru's most successful club domestically. Their best continental run came in 1972, becoming the first Peruvian club to reach a Libertadores final — they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Independiente of Avellaneda. They play at the Estadio Monumental, South America's second-largest stadium by capacity.
