Founded in 1936 in the mining city of Donetsk (the name means 'miners' in Ukrainian), Shakhtar were the first club from independent Ukraine to win a European title: in 2009, under Mircea Lucescu, they beat Werder Bremen 2-1 in the UEFA Cup final in Istanbul, with an extra-time winner from Jádson. Since Russia's 2022 invasion, the club has played its home games far from Donetsk, but has kept its place among Europe's regular competitors.
