Peñarol won the tournament's very first edition in 1960, beating Paraguay's Olimpia in the final (1-0 in Montevideo, 1-1 in Asunción) to take the title 2-1 on aggregate. Ecuadorian striker Alberto Spencer — the competition's all-time top scorer despite playing for a Uruguayan club — was central to that era. They added four more titles (1961, 1966, 1982 and 1987).
