Nacional was born in 1899 from the merger of two clubs, founded by students seeking a team made up entirely of Uruguayan-born players, in response to the dominance of clubs tied to the British community. They won three Libertadores titles (1971, 1980 and 1988) and star, alongside Peñarol, in Uruguayan football's biggest derby.
